At least 25 people were killed and six injured in a massive fire that tore through a Goa nightclub in the early hours of Sunday, triggering questions over safety norms and emergency preparedness.
The blaze broke out around 1 am at Birch By Romeo Lane in Arpora village, about 25 km from Panaji, while nearly 100 people were inside the venue attending a Bollywood DJ night. According to officials and eyewitnesses, the fire originated near the dance floor and kitchen area, spreading rapidly through the nightclub’s largely palm-leaf and temporary structures.
Trapped and Suffocated
Several partygoers rushed downstairs towards the kitchen area to escape the flames, but were trapped by thick smoke along with staff members. Police said most victims died due to suffocation, while a few suffered burn injuries.
Firefighters faced difficulty reaching the spot as the club has a narrow entry and exit, connected to the main road through tight lanes. Fire engines had to be parked nearly 400 metres away, delaying rescue operations.
Possible Safety Violations
Local panchayat officials said the club was constructed without proper permissions and had earlier been issued notices for violating norms. The premises reportedly used flammable materials, which accelerated the spread of the fire. An inquiry has been ordered to determine responsibility.
Arrests and Probe
Police believe a gas cylinder explosion in the kitchen may have triggered the blaze. The nightclub’s manager has been arrested, while a warrant has been issued against the owner. The victims include staff members and tourists, including members of a Delhi family.
Reactions
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant called it a “very painful day” for the state and assured strict action against those found negligent. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief and said all possible assistance is being provided to the affected families.
Emergency teams continue to comb through the charred remains as investigations into the tragedy remain underway.
