Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha’s 80th Anniversary Celebrations Held in City
In a grand gathering that celebrated cultural heritage and community spirit, the Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha marked its 80th anniversary on Friday, showcasing its enduring contributions to the Tamil culture. Justice G.R. Swaminathan of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court delivered a thought-provoking address about the significance of culture in distinguishing societies around the world.
The Essence of Culture
During his speech, Justice Swaminathan emphasized, “The difference between India and Afghanistan or India and Europe is culture. [Culture is] not just our language. But all activities are spiritually inclined…. If we leave this, we lose our identity.” His poignant remarks resonated with the audience, highlighting the importance of preserving cultural practices and traditions.
He further articulated, “Our temples and sabhas only preserve our identity. Sabhas, especially, keep our society alive.” By this, he underscored the critical role that cultural institutions like the Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha play in maintaining the fabric of Tamil society. For the past 80 years, this sabha has been a beacon of artistic expression and community cohesion, bringing distinction to the Tamil community through its activities.
No Easy Feat
Former Chief Election Commissioner of India, N. Gopalaswami, also addressed the gathering, noting that reaching 80 years as a sabha is a remarkable achievement. “The fact that it has survived and stood tall in its field was no easy feat and required the contributions of many,” he remarked. His acknowledgment of the collaborative efforts that led to the sabha’s longevity highlighted the collective spirit that fosters such institutions.
Gopalaswami praised the sabha for its role in nurturing emerging talent, stating, “This sabha gives opportunities to the upcoming youth and accomplished artists.” This commitment to promoting and empowering artists ensures the continuous evolution of Tamil culture and its arts.

As part of the 80th-anniversary celebrations, a special souvenir was released, symbolizing the rich heritage and history of the Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha.
