Mobile Sanitation Vehicle for Police Personnel Launched in Bengaluru
In a significant step towards enhancing the working conditions of the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) personnel, the Home Department launched ‘Hygiene on Go’ on Friday—a pioneering initiative that introduces a mobile sanitation vehicle dedicated exclusively to the Bengaluru City Police. This innovative project aims to provide accessible, safe, and hygienic sanitation facilities for traffic police personnel stationed across some of the city’s busiest corridors.

The launch event was graced by Home Minister G. Parameshwara, who flagged off the vehicles alongside senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers. This initiative emerges as a necessary response to the pressing need for adequate sanitation services for police employees tackling heavy traffic situations throughout the day.

The Home Department has invested a substantial ₹2.06 crore to procure and modify three specialized vehicles that will operate under this initiative. These vehicles are set to remain in service for a period of 27 months, until March 2028. Designed to navigate three major traffic-heavy routes—Thanisandra, Adugodi, and Mysuru Road—these vehicles will run daily from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., covering a total of 91 designated halting points. This strategic coverage is intended to ensure timely and reliable access for traffic officers during their shifts.
Features of the Mobile Sanitation Vehicles
The mobile sanitation vehicles are equipped with separate washrooms for male and female police officers, addressing a significant gap in the provision of sanitation services. Besides sanitation, the vehicles are outfitted with exterior CCTV coverage, GPS tracking systems, and LED displays that broadcast essential road safety messages. These features will ensure not only cleanliness but also a certain level of security and awareness for the officers using them.
Addressing Health Concerns
According to police officials, the restricted access to safe and adequate sanitation facilities during duty hours has often led to various health issues among officers, including dehydration, urinary infections, and significant discomfort. A senior male officer remarked on the favorable implications of this mobile sanitation arrangement, particularly for women. He pointed out that while washrooms are generally more accessible for men, this initiative particularly addresses the challenges faced by female officers.
Reactions from Traffic Personnel
A woman traffic police inspector expressed her gratitude for the new service, underscoring that the vehicles would be particularly beneficial during peak hours when traditional washroom facilities are far from their deployed locations. “We have a new system of e-attendance where we must clock in when we begin our duty at the assigned location. If we move beyond 100 meters from our location, the system records it, and higher officers often reprimand us for being away, even for a few minutes. The mobile sanitation vehicles will greatly alleviate this issue,” she explained.
Another female officer highlighted the additional amenities in the mobile units, like sanitary pad disposal facilities, which she believes will significantly assist women personnel, particularly during their menstrual cycles. This feature demonstrates the government’s commitment to not only enhancing sanitation but also promoting gender sensitivity within the police force.
