Bengaluru Lawyer Accuses Bollywood Star Ranveer Singh of Offending Tulu Community’s Religious Sentiments

Bengaluru Advocate Files Police Complaint Against Bollywood Actor Ranveer Singh for ‘Hurting Religious Sentiments’ of Tulu Community

A Bengaluru-based advocate has taken a significant step by filing a formal complaint at the High Grounds Police Station, accusing renowned Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh of insulting the traditional Tulu spirit-worship practices depicted in the highly controversial movie, Kantara.

Details of the Complaint

The advocate, Prashanth Methal, who practices law in the High Court of Karnataka, submitted a comprehensive written complaint alleging that Singh’s actions during a stage act at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which was held in Goa on November 28, have deeply offended the spiritual community.

Allegations Against Ranveer Singh

According to Methal’s complaint, the actor’s performance included a caricature of the revered Panchurli/Guliga Daiva—a divine spirit worshiped in the coastal regions of Karnataka. The advocate characterized Singh’s performance as ‘crude, derogatory, and comical’. He claimed that it caused ‘deep hurt’ to the Hindu religious sentiments, particularly among the Tulu-speaking community, which holds these traditions and beliefs in high regard.

Claims of Blasphemy and Disrespect

The complaint provides additional context, stating that Ranveer Singh referred to the daiva as a ‘ghost’, a term that the complainant deemed to be blasphemous and indicative of ‘deliberate disrespect’ towards Hindu beliefs. This remark, according to Methal, has not only caused a backlash among devout followers but has also led to the rapid spread of the video online, inciting ‘anger and resentment’ among the community.

Legal Demands from the Advocate

In light of these accusations, Advocate Methal has demanded that police authorities initiate legal action for outraging religious feelings, fostering enmity between communities, and intentional insult. He has urged the police to register a First Information Report (FIR) against Singh to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.

Police Acknowledgment

The complaint has been officially acknowledged by the Station House Officer (SHO) of the High Grounds Police Station, indicating that the matter will be investigated further.

As this issue evolves, it reflects the ongoing tensions surrounding cultural representation and respect for religious traditions, particularly in a diverse and pluralistic society like India.
