Cyclone Ditwah: Puducherry Receives Moderate Rainfall
On Saturday night, November 29, 2025, Cyclone Ditwah, which is currently brewing in the Bay of Bengal, brought moderate rainfall to the Puducherry region of the Union Territory. The region, known for its unique blend of Indian and French culture, started receiving intermittent rain from Saturday afternoon and continued to experience consistent rainfall until early Sunday morning, November 30.
An official from the Revenue Department reported that Puducherry recorded approximately 7.53 cm of rainfall over the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. This amount of rain is significant for the area, as the territory typically experiences varying weather patterns influenced by monsoon systems.
Impact on Local Communities
Despite the steady rain, no major inundation was reported within the town. However, certain areas, particularly Papama Koil Road, experienced waterlogging on Saturday evening. Local authorities acted swiftly to drain out the accumulated rainwater to prevent any potential hazards for commuters and residents.
In response to the conditions, the local administration took preemptive measures to protect vulnerable communities. Families belonging to the Irular community, who reside in flood-prone areas such as Karuvadikuppam and Moolakulam, were relocated to temporary shelters to ensure their safety. Puducherry District Collector A. Kulothungan conducted an inspection of the relief camp near the airport on Sunday morning to assess the situation firsthand.
During his visit, Mr. Kulothungan remarked that the displaced families were being accommodated in a private school, where the local administration is actively providing food and addressing their other essential needs. “Since the territory remains on red alert, we are ensuring that all necessary precautions are taken to facilitate effective rescue and relief operations,” he added, highlighting the commitment of local officials in safeguarding the welfare of the community during adverse weather conditions.
Rainfall in Cuddalore District
In addition, the neighbouring Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu has also been affected by Cyclone Ditwah, receiving around 6.83 cm of rainfall within the same 24-hour timeframe. The area of Sethiyathope recorded the highest amount of rainfall, with a staggering 12 cm during this period. Authorities in Cuddalore are monitoring the situation closely to ensure safety and prevent flooding in vulnerable areas.
As the cyclone continues to develop, residents are being advised to stay informed about weather updates and heed any warnings issued by local authorities. Preparations for emergency responses are ongoing, reflecting the commitment of the region to protect its citizens during this weather event.
